Bill O' Riley, the talk show host, on his program recently discussed education in America. An important point he made was that there are many students who do not do well with academics, and they should be placed in technical or skills type classes. What was not mentioned by the former school teacher is where were these students going to get these technical versus academic classes. Throughout the United States over the years, vocational training was removed from the public schools, leaving only academics. However, some students in a class may not be too keen on academics and may just meet minimum requirements for graduation. Therefore, if a graduate does not go on to an institution of higher learning and persue a career in the professions, and without any useful skills and knowledge, often can only obtain menial and low paying jobs that may be available in service industries. Vocational education is in most cases a form of secondary or post-secondary education. In some cases, vocational education can contribute towards a tertiary education at a university as academic credit however, it is rarely considered in its own form to fall under the traditional definition of a higher education. Up until the end of the twentieth century, vocational education focused on trades (for example, automobile mechanic or welder), and was therefore associated with the activities of the lower class. As a consequence, it attracted a level of stigma. Vocational education is related to the age-old apprenticeship system of learning.
